I’d love to start my reviews with this restaurant in particular, the reason being that I seem to have inspired their Vegan menu!
I found a position at The Crown as bar assistant at the end of February this year and, staff meal after staff meal (which initially consisted of no more than sweet potato fries and fresh mixed leaf salads), the two already highly creative chefs gradually started to apply their knowledge of food, smell, taste, shapes and colours to my dishes.
New Vegan Menu
Slowly I became the guinea pig on whom they’d test their new vegan recipes until one day, Kabelo, the owner of The Crown, decided to launch the restaurant’s brand new vegan menu on June the 2nd! I never pushed this so, when it finally happened, I was literally over the moon: I knew something in Kabby clicked and he made the connection to veganism. Since his menus already provided vegetarian and gluten free choices; he fully integrated diversity, as he is far from having a one-way point of view in his [long] experience as chef. I was omni for a long time before making that connection and I wasn’t pushed into making it, but guided gently at my own pace. Perhaps this is some kind of payback!?
A month on, The Crown Vegan menu has been received very well by the community, especially considering the increased number of vegans in and around Milton Keynes. Vegetarian customers as well as omnivores have ordered food from it, with very good reviews and feedback (available to view on TripAdvisor). This has certainly brought The Crown to a different level of service as it now caters for most types of dietary needs, which makes it an inclusive restaurant to my eyes.
I only wish that, upon presenting newcomers with the Vegan menu, some people would stop responding by making unnecessary comments or laughing just because they are not vegans: I do trust, in a near future, to hear more comments that do not mock a simple offering, and that people start accepting that we are allowed different needs and to make diverse choices when it comes to food.
Vegan Wines and Beers
Along with the Vegan menu, there is also a small list of vegan beers and vegan wines that The Crown already sells, making it nice to know that someone has done the research for you and you can also trust what you drink.
My hope is that the Vegan Menu at The Crown continues to go from strength to strength and develops further with newer and amazing dishes for all to enjoy.
The Crown is listed in the Vegan Life Directory and you can rate and write your own review of The Crown on their page.
