A Wonderful Venue to host the new Vegan Supper Club

Kitchen at The Three LocksSitting here within ten feet of an open roaring fire, the sounds of plates and glasses clinking around me and much chatter and laughter coming from other tables, it’s easy to see why customers love The Three Locks in Stoke Hammond, Buckinghamshire.

It’s 4:30pm and the restaurant is buzzing, despite the fact that it’s neither lunchtime nor dinner time. Having personally visited The Three Locks on numerous occasions over the past couple of years, tasted the delicious and frequently changing vegan offerings and enjoyed the superb hospitality, I’m feeling comfortable and relaxed as I wait.

Today, I’m here for a special reason – to interview Matt Jackson, General Manager and Mayank Rana, the new Sous-Chef who’s responsible for the new vegan offerings.

Vegan Menu with World Influences

The Three Locks - Vegan Menu PhotoMatt tells me that the original idea of creating a vegan menu was in response to the pub’s previous owners, who had a son that was dairy-free and a daughter who was vegan. The owners liked to eat at the pub and, having done some research, it also appeared to make good business sense to try out a vegan menu. Having firmly tested and established the menu, Matt says the response has been phenomenal. The menu obviously attracts vegan customers but these customers also bring their family and friends along and this has really boosted sales.

Mayank, who is from a family of vegetarians in India, brings many ideas from home but also likes to create fusion food, for example, mixing Indian and Italian or Indian and Mexican to create unique dishes. One of his current favourites on the menu is Curried Aubergine with Couscous, which mixes Indian and Moroccan flavours together, while giving the whole dish an English twist with the inclusion of fresh Rosemary and Thyme.

Matt, having more of a sweet tooth, says that the vegan chocolate cake is divine and is his absolute favourite dessert, even when competing against the non-vegan options.

The Vegan Supper Club

Following the success of the regular vegan menu and the soon-to-be appearance of vegan options on the daily specials board, Matt and his team have decided to hold a special event to mark ‘Veganuary’ – The Vegan Supper Club – which will take place on the evening of Friday 26 January.

Vegan Supper Club Social Media ImageThe idea behind the event is to bring something special to the local vegan community and existing loyal customers, creating a celebratory banquet-style, table-sharing evening, with terrific food and entertainment, all for a reasonable price.

Customers can expect a selection of canapes on arrival, table-sharing world cuisine platters, a large choice of a-la-carte mains and dessert options (to be pre-ordered in advance) and speciality teas and coffees. Mayank says he’s especially looking forward to preparing Indian vegetable cake, stuffed with flavoured peas and served with coriander chutney, as well as a rosti, which has a French influence.

The evening will be co-hosted by Vegan Life. We’ll be there to welcome guests, to encourage socialising between table neighbours and to ensure everyone is enjoying after dinner drinks and the live music from the classic rock band.

Vegan Menus to be launched at 4 other pubs

The Three Locks is owned by Epic Pub Group. The Group has been so impressed with the impact of the vegan menu at the pub that they’re introducing vegan menus into all of their pubs during Veganuary 2018. Other pubs in the Group are The Wheatsheaf in Bow Brickhill, The Anchor in Aspley Guise, 185 Watling Street in Towcester and The Knife and Cleaver in Houghton Conquest. Vegan Life will announce further details and publish all the menus as soon as we get them.

If the Vegan Supper Club goes well, we might also see it expand to the other pubs in the Epic Group during 2018…so watch this space for more!
