We finally made a visit to the delightful Olney Pancake Parlour, just 15 minutes drive from Milton Keynes. Its been a pancake place for more than a year so we don’t know why we’ve only just discovered it!
The cafe is very deceptive, something of a tardis, and it was quite busy when we arrived for our Sunday midday brunch. Luckily, Vicky had booked a table and this is recommended if you’re planning a visit at a weekend. It’s beautifully presented in pastel shades and feels cosy despite being spacious.
They serve a great selection of pancakes, both sweet and savoury, as well as more traditional breakfast and lunch options like paninis, salads, veggie chilli and jacket potatoes.
We thought it was very reasonably priced, at around £7.50 a head for a pancake and a medium sized coffee. The coffee was smooth and creamy and I’m always pleased when there’s no extra charge for decaff or soya.
Vicky decided on a sweet pancake option, Mixed Berries and Fruit Coulis, while I chose the savoury Mediterranean Vegetables with pine nuts, pumpkin seeds, black olives and sweet chilli hummus.
Both pancakes were absolutely delicious, light and fluffy. The savoury pancake was full of complex textures and flavours. The presentation was also exceptional. Vicky said she would have liked to have had a scoop of vegan vanilla ice-cream with her sweet pancake.
Our other minor complaint is that we wanted more and could possibly have managed a second one. We’d definitely go for a double size option and pay more if it was available or, even better, try a savoury and a sweet pancake if a special offer was available. We did see an afternoon tea option on the website which included a mix like this but we couldn’t see it offered when we arrived.
We have very little critical to add except that it was slightly chilly with the door open and we had to wait about 20 minutes for the food to arrive, though we were warned during ordering. However, these were minor inconveniences and didn’t take away from the positive experience. We will definitely be back…possibly as early as next week!
